Yes, Encore develops both data modems and fax modem algorithms. The data modem the standards implemented are V.90, V.34/V.32bis/V.32 and the fax data pump implemented are V.17/V.29/V.27ter.

Encore’s data/fax modems are available on Texas Instruments’ TMS320C5000 and C6000 series of DSPs and Infineon’s Carmel DSP. Apart from being available on these DSPs Encore can also port these standards to customers specific DSPs or processors.

The modem standard is first implemented in ANSI C as an algorithm. This is then ported on to different DSPs using Assembly language. Of course every DSP will have its own compilers and debuggers which we have to be aware of. Like TI has a slightly high level DSP programming software called the Code Composer Studio which we are quite aware of.

The V.34 data modem transfers data at the rate of 36.6 kbps and Encore has finished implementing the V.34 standard with full fallback on TI’s C54x and TI’s C62x DSPs apart from finishing the C code itself.

Encore is a 10-year-old company developing DSP technology and has specialized in it. Encore’s modem code is completely tested for ruggedness using the standard telecom test equipments. The code is tested for all kinds of line impairments, which are simulated in the connection using equipments such as TAS.

The interoperability tests are conducted both at Encore’s site as well as on the field. For example to test the fax code for interoperability, we have fax machine simulator software called FaxLab, which has the profiles of 110 fax machines world over. The code is tested with every profile apart from actual field trials later on.

V.17 transmits fax at 14.4kbps. Encore has the V.17 fax pump with complete fall back.
