Infineon Technologies licenses modem solution from Encore Software
May 26, 2000 --- Munich-based semiconductor manufacturer, Infineon
Technologies AG, has licensed carrier-class fax modem technology from
Bangalore-based design house, Encore Software Limited. The deal
reflects a growing trend among semiconductor companies to turn to
Indian software design houses for algorithms for their silicon,
Electronic
Business Asia, an E-inSITE affiliate, reports.
According to Vinay Deshpande, chairman and CEO of Encore, his
company will offer the fax modem application in source, to run in
assembly language on Infineon's Carmel DSP core. The 16-bit, fixed
point Carmel DSP core is targeted at communications and consumer
applications.
"We have licensed our fax/data pump, fax relay, and fax-over-IP to
Infineon," added Deshpande. "The software will be embedded, along with
additional logic and memory, in system-on-a-chip solutions based on the
Carmel core."
The fax modem supports multiple channels, and is targeted at public
switched telephone network (PSTN) carriers. Encore has also licensed
to Infineon the software layer that enables the deployment of these fax
modems for fax-over-IP applications. According to Deshpande, the
technology has already been field tested for over a year since Encore
had earlier licensed it to undisclosed customers in Japan, who
implemented the technology on DSPs from Texas Instruments Inc.
